- A Death Has Occured
Barbara Jean (Muff) Swercheck 84, formerly of Harrisburg, PA, passed away in Sherman Oaks, CA on February 27, 2018. She was born to Mark and Marguerite (Jefferies) Muff on January 28, 1934 in Clearwater, NE. As a young girl, she lived on a farm and rode a horse to attend classes in a one room schoolhouse. She spent many wonderful days on the farm with her sisters caring for her 4H animals and playing in the fields. After graduation from High School, she took secretarial classes and then moved to Washington, DC where she was a stenographer for the FBI.
Barbara married Paul Swercheck in June 1957. She and her husband resided in Devon Manor of Colonial Park for over 50 years where they raised their four daughters. Both were devoted parishioners of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church and they spent many years volunteering at the church and school in numerous capacities. Barb was a superior seamstress. She taught sewing classes at Holy Name and sewed outfits for her daughters and their dolls as well as costumes for the Bishop McDevitt High School musicals. Eventually she opened her own drapery business in the basement of her home. Barb made sure her daughters participated in various activities from plays, chorus, musicals and art lessons to team sports where she could be found cheering them on from the sidelines. She was extremely generous with her time and talents always ready to cook a meal or lend a helping hand to friends, family, and especially the polish university intern students. She was famous for her apple pies, chicken dinners and cartwheels. Barb's passing will deprive the world of many unique talents thus far known only to her close family such as the ability to crack an apple in half with her bare hands or her bionic hearing that could detect stocking feet sneaking upstairs at any hour of the night.
Barbara is survived by her daughters Hedy Swercheck and her partner Tom Adams of Simi Valley, CA, Valerie Hoffmann and her husband, Patrick of Cary, NC, Natalie Mahdesian and her husband, Michael of Studio City, CA, and Laurie Sewell and her husband, Bill Gibbons, of Northridge, CA. Her sister Bonita resides in Lincoln, NE. She has 7 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul and sister, Carolyn.
A funeral mass will be held at Holy Name of Jesus church on Sat. April 14, 2018 at 11:00AM immediately followed by a luncheon and celebration of her life at JoJo's on 22. Barbara will be buried at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery where her husband was buried in 2016. For more information please email: firstname.lastname@example.org. Throughout her life, Barb insisted that she did not want to receive flowers after her death.
